SoCal Residence

Designing for an active family.  A dog. Handprints. Sand. Working from home. Neurodiversity.

 And a sprinkling of zen.

The Backstory

Chaos reigns supreme in this neurodiverse household of two working parents, two active boys and one very chill, large pup.  When purchased, their home was embraced every shade of brown imaginable, not fully realizing the potential offered via a clean plan diagram and incredible light exposure. Given their swift renovation timeline, the family jumped right in, confirming high level expectations and donning their agility caps, poised for unexpected pivots and decision making on the fly.

Expectations

  • Clean Simplicity

Exchange highly textured walls and ceilings for smooth surfaces

Exchange rounded outside corners for right angled corners

Introduce the same flooring material throughout

Create a neutral, streamlined kit of parts palette that resonates throughout the home, welcomes color accents, and allows the grace for aesthetic shifts as the family grows

  • Maximizing Natural Light

Establish 3 Primary Paint Colors: light neutrals offset by one contrasting dark neutral

Simple Window Treatments: consistently used throughout

  • Minimizing Maintenance

Dirty hands on stair walls is a given. The family took this head-on, selecting a fun, highly patterned, scrubbable wallcovering that was sophisticated - yet campy - leaning into their boys' love of wild cats.

Dishes, dishes, more dishes. Cleaning in the kitchen is an unwelcome family sport. Minimizing grout (full backsplash), avoiding dust accumulation (European-style, flat cabinet doors), and placing an outlet strip at the underside of the cabinets were no-brainers. Easy-to-clean quartz tops, fingerprint-proof stainless appliances, and an appliance 'garage' were givens.

The shower in the primary restroom leans into the same simple design premise. Large porcelain slabs at the shower's vertical surfaces minimize grout. The slightly modeled large format floor tile is dark - with dark grout - to anchor the space, as well bend and flex with wear.

The sloped sinks and arced faucets at the undercounter-mounted vanity minimize splash and debris deposited onto the basin surface.
